What we asked“Make a sound effect pack for a game where the player walks on many different surfaces: short, clear single footsteps. Save each sound as a WAV file in a sounds folder, named like this: - step-grass: A single footstep on soft grass, a short muffled swish of crisp noise under a quarter second. - step-dirt: A single footstep on packed dirt, a dull soft thud with a little grit, under a quarter second. - step-gravel: A single footstep on loose gravel, a crunchy burst of small stone clicks, about a quarter second. - step-stone: A single hard shoe footstep on stone floor, a sharp click with a faint short echo. - step-wood: A single footstep on a hollow wooden floor, a warm knock with a slight boomy body. - step-metal: A single footstep on a metal grate, a ringing clank with a short metallic buzz. - step-snow: A single footstep in fresh snow, a soft squeaky crunch about a quarter second long. - step-sand: A single footstep in dry sand, a soft sliding hiss with almost no attack. - step-water: A single footstep in a shallow puddle, a short wet splash under a third of a second. - step-mud: A single footstep in thick mud, a wet squelch with a small sucking release. - step-carpet: A single footstep on carpet, a very soft dull thump, quiet and short. - land-thud: A heavy landing after a jump onto hard ground, a low thump with a short scuff. Make them sound like they belong to the same game.”

What happened

Claude
I made all 12 footstep sounds and saved them as WAV files (16-bit, mono, 44.1 kHz) in sounds/. I can't play audio, so I haven't listened to them. I checked them with spectrograms and level measurements, then fixed the problems that showed up: clicks where long ringing sounds were cut off at the end (wood, metal, landing), a mud release and landing scuff that were too loud, and too much grit on dirt. Please listen before you use them.

We gave the prompt above to a fresh Claude Code session in an empty folder, with no skills and no extra tools. It wrote a small program that makes every sound from scratch, and it took about 2 minutes. Claude can’t hear, so it checked the sounds by measuring them. Press play and judge them yourself.

Every sound is also in the sound effects library, where you can search all packs at once. They are free to use in your games, commercial or not.
