What we asked“Make a sound effect pack for any game with walking characters: random footstep variations on grass, stone, wood and metal so steps never sound repeated. Save each sound as a WAV file in a sounds folder, named like this: - step-grass-1: Variation 1 of 3 grass footsteps: a soft rustling crunch of a shoe on grass, medium pitch, very short. - step-grass-2: Variation 2 of 3 grass footsteps: like variation 1 but slightly lower and longer with a bit more rustle. - step-grass-3: Variation 3 of 3 grass footsteps: a lighter, quicker grass step, a little higher and drier than the others. - step-stone-1: Variation 1 of 3 stone footsteps: a firm hard-sole tap on a stone floor with a short echo, very short. - step-stone-2: Variation 2 of 3 stone footsteps: like variation 1 but slightly heavier with a faint gritty scuff. - step-stone-3: Variation 3 of 3 stone footsteps: a lighter, sharper stone tap, a bit higher in pitch than the others. - step-wood-1: Variation 1 of 3 wooden floor footsteps: a hollow knock of a shoe on wooden boards, very short. - step-wood-2: Variation 2 of 3 wooden floor footsteps: like variation 1 but lower and with a tiny board creak after. - step-wood-3: Variation 3 of 3 wooden floor footsteps: a quicker, lighter wooden tap, slightly brighter than the others. - step-metal-1: Variation 1 of 3 metal footsteps: a boot on a metal grate, a clanky tap with a short ring, very short. - step-metal-2: Variation 2 of 3 metal footsteps: like variation 1 but deeper and duller, as if on a thicker plate. - step-metal-3: Variation 3 of 3 metal footsteps: a lighter, higher metal tap with a slight rattle, very short. Make them sound like they belong to the same game.”

What happened

Claude
I made the 12 footstep sounds and saved them in sounds/ with the names you gave. I couldn't listen to them, so I checked them by measuring length, volume and brightness instead. Within each surface, the variations measure the way you described: the "higher/brighter" ones are brighter and the "deeper/lower" ones are darker. Give them a listen before you use them, because synthesized footsteps can sound off to the ear in ways the numbers won't show.

We gave the prompt above to a fresh Claude Code session in an empty folder, with no skills and no extra tools. It wrote a small program that makes every sound from scratch, and it took under 2 minutes. Claude can’t hear, so it checked the sounds by measuring them. Press play and judge them yourself.

Every sound is also in the sound effects library, where you can search all packs at once. They are free to use in your games, commercial or not.
